The Herald is to encourage the study and development of heraldry in the Barony. Our Herald is also responsible for maintaining the Baronial Order of Precedence and the completion of all required written reports to Kingdom Officers.

Office of the Chronicler CHRONICLER

The Chronicler is the editor or officer in charge of the local group's newsletter.

The newsletter exists to server the needs of the local group or organization, to inform and educate that group of people about the SCA community in which they live and to further the educational purposes of the SCA. It is crucial that the members of a group communicate with one another, and a newsletter is an excellent method of communicating with the populace. Baronies are expected to have a regularly published newsletter. A recognized newsletter has as its editor a chronicler who is warranted by the Kingdom Chronicler. Chroniclers must be paid members of the SCA and must make a written report to their Kingdom Chronicler and their local branch treasurer on a regular basis. (excerpt taken from the "Chronicler's Handbook for the Kingdom of Ealdormere" Dec 2001)

ChatelaineCHATELAINE
The Chatelaine is the local officer in charge of greeting and helping new and prospective members integrate themselves into the SCA. The Chatelaine ensures that the newcomer has access to all pertinent information and forms within the SCA, such as membership forms, officer lists, meeting schedules, newsletter subscription forms, and any pamphlets or brochures designed specifically for newcomers. Usually it is the Chatelaine who introduces the newcomer to the various officers of the group, and guides them to the appropriate gentle for help in making garb, getting to events, and any specific activity the newcomer may be interested in, such as fighting or archery. The Chatelaine also works in conjunction with the Keeper of the Gold Key to loan costumes, and feast gear as needed to the newcomer. He/She may also organize accommodations for out-of-town guests for local events.

The Chatelaine's duties also include fielding questions and queries from newcomers from general emails/letters or from the Guestbook of the Baronial Website . This Guestbook should be checked at least once a month for new entries.

This office is known by various titles throughout the SCA; you’ll also hear it called "Hospitaller", "Chamberlain", or "Castellan". While Chatelaine is strictly speaking a feminine form, its also often used by men who happen to hold the office. All these terms derive from words used in the Middle Ages for the person in charge of domestic logistics for a large estate or-- in the case of "Hospitaller" -- order.

In the Kingdom of Ealdormere, the Kingdom Chatelaine’s office is a Deputy of the Kingdom Seneschal’s Office. Baronial Chatelaines report twice a year to the Kingdom Chatelaine, that being June 20th and December 20th. (Canton Chatelaines report twice a year to the Baronial Chatelaine.)

Most Kingdoms have a separate badge for their Chatelaine’s office, but those who do not use the badge for the Gold Key which is: Vert, a key palewise inverted and reversed Or.

Ealdormere currently does not have a separate badge for the office.
